Coupon Stacking Rules: What's Allowed and What's Not
"Stacking" means combining more than one discount on a single order. Some combinations are fair game; others are explicitly against a restaurant's policy.
What usually doesn't stack
Most restaurants limit how many of their own promotions apply per order. Common restrictions include:
- "One discount per visit/order" language, meaning you can't combine two separate coupon codes from the same restaurant.
- Loyalty points and a percentage-off coupon are sometimes mutually exclusive — you may have to choose one or the other at checkout.
- BOGO and other item-specific deals frequently can't be combined with a separate storewide discount.
What usually does stack
- Payment-based rewards (a cashback credit card, a third-party cashback app) generally stack with restaurant coupons, since the restaurant's system has no visibility into how you're paying.
- Discounted gift cards used as payment stack with almost everything, since they function as regular currency at checkout.
- Loyalty points earned on a discounted order — you typically still earn points on the discounted total, just a smaller amount than a full-price order.
How to check
Terms are usually printed in small text on the coupon or in the app's offer details. When in doubt, ask staff before ordering — most are happy to tell you what will and won't combine, and it avoids an awkward surprise at checkout.
Is this actually allowed?
Combining discounts that are permitted by the restaurant's own terms isn't fraud or a loophole — it's simply using the programs as designed. The line to avoid is using expired, counterfeit, or otherwise unauthorized codes, or misrepresenting your account details to unlock a discount you don't qualify for. Legitimate stacking (payment rewards plus one valid restaurant offer) carries no risk beyond, at worst, a cashier declining the second discount.
Bottom line
Focus stacking efforts on combinations that don't rely on the restaurant's own systems recognizing multiple discounts — payment method rewards plus one restaurant-side offer is usually the safest combination.
