How Restaurant Loyalty Apps Work (and How to Stack Rewards)

Almost every major chain has a rewards app now, and they're not all created equal. Understanding the mechanics helps you get more free food for less effort.

How points typically work

Most programs award points per dollar spent, redeemable for free items once you hit a threshold. A few things that are true across most apps:

  • Sign-up bonuses exist for a reason — most programs give you a free item just for creating an account. Always claim it before your first order.
  • App-exclusive deals are common. Chains like Chipotle and Panera regularly push offers only visible in-app, not at the register.
  • Points expire. Many programs zero out your balance after 6-12 months of inactivity, so don't let a small balance sit forever.
  • Birthday rewards are one of the most reliable perks — see our birthday freebies guide for how to set these up in advance.

Stacking rewards for bigger savings

The real savings come from combining, not just collecting:

  1. Order through the app to earn points (may not apply if you order at the counter).
  2. Pay with a credit card that offers cashback or bonus points on dining.
  3. Apply a discounted gift card (more on that in our gift card guide) as your payment method.
  4. Use a cashback shopping app on top, if the retailer allows it.

Each layer alone might only save 5-10%, but stacked together they add up to a meaningfully cheaper meal.

What you're trading for the rewards

Loyalty apps aren't free to use in a literal sense — you're exchanging personal data (order history, location, sometimes birthdate and payment info) for the discount. That's a reasonable trade for a chain you visit regularly, but it's worth being deliberate about which apps you install rather than signing up for every chain you've ever ordered from once.

A few things people get wrong

  • Points are tied to your account, not your phone. Losing or replacing your phone doesn't erase your balance — log into the same account on a new device and it's still there.
  • One account per person is the norm. Creating multiple accounts to farm repeated sign-up bonuses violates most programs' terms and can get accounts merged or reward balances forfeited if caught.
  • Ordering at the register can still earn points at many chains if you show the app's scannable code or link your card, but always ask — some locations only award points for app or kiosk orders.

Is it worth it?

If you eat at a chain more than once a month, downloading the app is almost always worth it — the sign-up bonus alone often pays for itself on the first order. For places you visit rarely, skip it; the value comes from repeat use.
