Delivery App vs. Pickup: The Real Cost Comparison

August 7, 2026Claire2 min read

Ordering delivery almost always costs more than the menu price suggests. Understanding where the extra cost comes from helps you decide when delivery is worth it.

Where the markup comes from

  • Delivery fees, charged per order, on top of everything else.
  • Service fees, a separate percentage-based charge many apps add regardless of the delivery fee.
  • Menu price inflation: many restaurants list items 10-20% higher on delivery apps than in-store, to offset the commission the app charges the restaurant.
  • Small order fees if your total falls below a minimum threshold.
  • Tip, which is expected on top of all the above.

Doing the comparison

A $12 in-store meal can easily total $22-25 once delivery fees, service fees, inflated menu pricing, and tip are all included — nearly double the in-store price for the same food.

When pickup wins

Ordering pickup through the same app frequently avoids the delivery fee and sometimes the service fee too, while the restaurant's own app often shows accurate in-store menu pricing rather than the inflated delivery-app version. Many apps also run pickup-exclusive discount codes that don't apply to delivery orders.

Should you still tip for pickup?

There's no obligation the way there is for delivery, but a small tip (or none, depending on your own judgment) has become common at counter-service pickup, especially if staff bagged, boxed, or prepared a more complex order. Many pickup checkout screens now prompt for a tip by default — you're free to adjust or zero it out, this is a genuine choice rather than an expected charge like delivery gratuity.

When delivery is worth it

If time, mobility, or weather makes pickup impractical, delivery is still reasonable — just budget for the real total, not the menu price, and check whether ordering directly through the restaurant's own app or site is cheaper than a third-party delivery platform.
