Delivery App vs. Pickup: The Real Cost Comparison
Delivery almost always costs more than the menu suggests, and the gap is bigger than most people think. Fees are only part of it. Higher menu prices, service charges, and the tip all add up before the food reaches your door.
How big the gap is
When FinanceBuzz compared delivery costs for meals from 10 popular chains on Uber Eats, DoorDash, Grubhub, and Postmates, the average markup over menu price ranged from 69% to 92% depending on the app, counting fees, taxes, and a suggested tip. One example: fees pushed a $9.85 Chick-fil-A order of a sandwich, fries, and a drink to $16.87 on Uber Eats.
That's an extreme case, but the direction is consistent. A meal that's about $12 at the counter can easily reach $20 or more delivered.
Where the extra cost comes from
- Higher menu prices. Many restaurants list items for more on delivery apps than in the store, to cover the commission the app charges them.
- Delivery fee. A flat charge per order, sometimes waived with a subscription.
- Service fee. A separate percentage-based fee most apps add on top.
- Small-order fee. Added when your order is under the app's minimum.
- Tip. Expected for delivery, and calculated on an already higher total.
Restaurant deals often don't work on delivery apps
This one surprises people. Many of the best chain deals specifically exclude third-party delivery. In our listings, Buffalo Wild Wings' Tuesday and Thursday wing deals require the chain's own app or website, and Shake Shack's promo codes aren't valid on third-party apps. If you see a deal on FindMeCheapFood and order it through a delivery app, there's a good chance it won't apply.
Cheaper ways to get the same food
Order pickup in the restaurant's own app. You usually get in-store prices, no delivery or service fee, and access to app-only deals.
Use pickup in the delivery app. It avoids the delivery fee and sometimes the service fee, though the higher menu prices may still apply.
Order delivery directly from the restaurant. Some chains run their own delivery. It often costs less than a third-party app, and their own deals usually still apply.
Should you tip on pickup?
There's no obligation the way there is for delivery. Many checkout screens prompt for a tip on pickup orders by default, and you can adjust it. Some people leave a small tip for large or complicated orders.
When delivery is worth it
Delivery makes sense when getting to the restaurant isn't practical: bad weather, no car, a sick kid at home, or simply no time. When you do order delivery, budget for the full total rather than the menu price, and check whether the restaurant's own app or delivery service is cheaper than a third-party one.
