The Best Day of the Week for Restaurant Deals

Restaurants don't schedule promotions at random. Most deals exist to fix a specific problem: an empty dining room on a Monday night, a slow mid-afternoon, or customers who haven't downloaded the app yet. Once you know which problem a deal is solving, it gets much easier to predict when you'll find one.

We track live chain promotions on FindMeCheapFood every day, and the old rule mostly holds up, with one big exception.

The classic pattern: discounts follow empty tables

Sit-down restaurants are busiest Friday and Saturday night and slowest early in the week, so that's where dine-in deals cluster:

• Monday: Family deals show up here because it's often the slowest night. Outback Steakhouse has run a free kids' meal with each adult entrée on Mondays (more in our kids eat free guide).
• Tuesday: The busiest deal day. Taco Tuesday is the obvious one, but Buffalo Wild Wings runs a buy-one-get-one-50%-off deal on traditional wings, and Ruby Tuesday has offered kids eat free on Tuesday evenings.
• Wednesday: Mostly half-price appetizer, wine, and drink nights, usually set by the individual restaurant rather than the chain, so they're easy to miss unless you check locally.
• Thursday: A pre-weekend push. Buffalo Wild Wings pairs its Tuesday deal with buy-one-get-one-free boneless wings on Thursdays.

If you mostly eat at sit-down chains, Monday through Thursday is still where the value is. Weekend dine-in deals are rare because the tables fill without them.

The exception: app deals ignore the calendar

This is where the old advice to skip the weekend breaks down. Some of the most generous offers in our listings land on Friday and Sunday:

• McDonald's runs Free Fries Friday in its app: a free medium fries with a $1 purchase, once each Friday.
• Shake Shack keeps bringing back Chicken Sundays, a free Chicken Shack with a $10 order and the code CHICKENSUNDAY, in runs that last several months.

These deals aren't trying to fill seats. They're trying to get you into the app, since both only work in the app, online, or at a kiosk, or to win a day when a competitor is closed. Shake Shack's marketing team has said it picked Sunday because other chicken spots are closed that day.

For quick-service chains, check the app on weekends too. For sit-down restaurants, stick to weekdays.

Time of day matters as much as the day

Many deals are really "Tuesday at 3 p.m." deals:

• The afternoon lull, about 2 to 5 p.m.: Steak 'n Shake has long run half-price shakes and drinks on weekdays in this window at participating locations. Bar-and-grill happy hours land here too (see our happy hour guide).
• Scheduled app drops: Taco Bell's Tuesday Drops release a limited number of offers at a set time in its app. Once they're claimed, the deal is gone even though it's still Tuesday.

Read the fine print before you plan around a day

Recurring deals look simple but usually come with conditions. The ones we see most often:

• How you order: Buffalo Wild Wings' deals need its own app, website, or dine-in, not third-party delivery. The McDonald's and Shake Shack deals are app or kiosk only.
• Equal or lesser value: the second order of wings has to cost the same as or less than the first.
• Participating locations: franchise owners can opt out, so the same chain may honor a deal in one town and not the next.
• End dates: "every Sunday" often means every Sunday through a specific date. Shake Shack's Sunday offer has run in separate windows with different end dates.

Build a weekly rotation

Pick two or three deals near you that land on different days and make them your default for those nights. A realistic rotation might be kids eat free on Monday, wings on Tuesday or Thursday, and an app freebie on the weekend. A loyalty app at the chains you already visit earns points on top.
